What to look for in an air fryer
Air fryers are small convection ovens — a fan circulates hot air for crisp results with less oil. The right size and basket shape matter more than wattage. Consider household size, counter space and whether you'll also use it to bake or reheat.
Important specifications explained
- Capacity: 2–4 qt suits 1–2 people; 5–8 qt fits families; drawer vs basket shape affects usable space.
- Wattage: 1,500–1,800W is typical; higher wattage heats faster but doesn't guarantee better food.
- Temperature range: 350–450°F covers most frying; lower ranges (down to ~200°F) help for dehydrating.
- Basket style: Single drawer, dual basket (cook two foods at once), or oven-style with racks.
- Controls: Digital presets are convenient; dial controls are simple and durable.
- Cleanability: Dishwasher-safe, nonstick baskets save a lot of effort.
Different types of buyers
- Small households want a compact 2–4 qt model.
- Families benefit from 6+ qt or dual-basket models that cook two things at once.
- Multi-taskers may prefer a combi oven that air-fries, bakes and toasts.
- Health-focused cooks use air frying to cut oil while keeping crispness.
Price ranges
- Under $100: Solid single-basket basics.
- $100–$200: Larger capacity, presets and better build.
- $200+: Dual baskets, combi-oven styles and premium build.
